Nominations are currently being sought for three positions on CCEDNet’s Board of Directors. Anyone with energy and a vision for the CED movement in Canada is encouraged to submit a candidacy. The deadline to receive nominations is April 11, 2011.
This year we are seeking nominations for three at-large directors who will be elected to a three-year term by the members.

The Canadian CED Network’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is being held on June 7th, 2011 in conjunction with the Ontario regional CED conference at the Learning Enrichment Foundation in Toronto.

Member Profile
Green Timiskaming (GT) is a group of citizens concerned about the future of the Timiskaming region. GT was established in 2009 as a community owned, not-for-profit development group devoted to building a greener way of life for the people of Timiskaming. All of their members are volunteers.
MISSION: Green Timiskaming is to developing Timiskaming into a sustainable regional community.
- GT aspires to make the region self-sustaining for energy and self-reliant for food production. Together we will build a strong future for our region, beginning with the development and operation of renewable energy projects.
- Rather than buying outside energy we plan to use our own renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar and wind power.
- Northern Ontario is blessed with resources; we must work together in order to use them most efficiently.
- GT projects aim to lower energy costs, providing all energy consumers with an improved quality of living.
- GT projects will give control to the local economy, partially insulating it from the impact of global market fluctuations and increasing energy prices.
- Green Timiskaming is an open, community-owned co-operative with a mandate to reinvest in future projects.

Ontario CED Event Updates
Request for Proposal (RFP) for Speakers, Case Studies and Posters
The Ontario CED event has launched a request for proposals for workshop, case and research study presenters as well as posters presentations.
We are looking for contribution in the following three formats:
1) Research and Case study presentation (90 minutes – 3 presentations x 20mins + discussion)
2) Tool and Training Sessions (90 minutes with 2 or 3 presenters)
3) Poster Presentation (limited to 20)

Relaunching – Enterprising Non-Profits Toronto Program 2011
The Centre for Social Innovation and the Toronto Enterprise Fund are thrilled to announce that the Enterprising Non-Profits Toronto Program will be re-launching in 2011! ENP-TO is a social enterprise capacity-building and granting program based on the successful ENP model in British Columbia. The Centre for Social Innovation has been piloting and incubating the program over the past two years and will now be moving ENP-TO to its new home at the Toronto Enterprise Fund.

Home Ownership Alternatives Releases Case Studies of Affordable Housing Developments
Home Ownership Alternatives has released 3 case studies which demonstrate how surplus government land can be transformed into successful mixed communities. All three studies provide details of former government sites which were sold at market price and redeveloped into new communities including affordable ownership housing.
“Home Ownership Alternatives wanted more people to realize what an impact careful redevelopment can have on a community.” said Joe Deschênes Smith, Vice President Partnerships at Home Ownership Alternatives. “In each case study, governments committed to find partners who would develop mixed income communities. Each government was paid market value for their land and at the same time helped families realize their dream of home ownership.”
The 3 case studies outline the acquisition of surplus government land in Toronto, Guelph and Kitchener Waterloo by developments financed by Home Ownership Alternatives. Surplus federal and school sites were redeveloped and municipalities played a key role.

CED Tools
The Community Tool Box’s mission is to promote community health and development by connecting people, ideas, and resources. The central document on the website is a 46 chapter guide with practical information about how to build community. The Community Tool Box is intended for professionals and ordinary citizens and can be used in everyday practice. The site addresses a broad range of topics such as leadership skills, program evaluation, and promoting participation. The site includes a Community Troubleshooting Guide, a Forum and Chatroom and a Community Work Station. The latter leads groups through steps for achieving particular goals (such as building partnerships or analyzing problems).

Funding Opportunties -EnAbling Change Partnership Program
The Ontario Government is looking for organizations that want to be leaders in: Improving accessibility for people with disabilities, and; Helping organizations meet the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
Under the annual EnAbling Change Partnership Program, the government provides project funding to organizations that have the vision, leadership and commitment to improve accessibility across industries or sectors. The Accessibility Directorate of Ontario, part of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, administers the program. Goals of the Program:
– Assist obligated organizations in complying with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and the accessibility standards
– Develop educational tools, resources and best practices that can be distributed to businesses and organizations across the province and across different sectors
– Encourage businesses and organizations to be leaders and share their knowledge and expertise with other partners, and
– Remove barriers for people with disabilities and improve accessibility.

Co-operative Youth Leadership (CYL) Program 2011
Every summer, Ontario credit unions and co-ops give 200 young people a chance to attend Co-operative Young Leaders. CYL is a program of the Ontario Co-operative Association. Registration is now active for CYL’s 2011 sessions.

EPIC (Enterprise Promotion and Investment Centre) is a Vaughan based incubator that Works with self reliant groups of prospective entrepreneurs and self employment minded members of marginalized communities.
EPIC is hosting the 2nd Social Economy Conference. The conference will Showcase Social Economy models now operating in Ontario and provide a collaborative forum for the stakeholders in the success of Social Economy initiatives in Ontario.

CASAE/AERC JOINT CONFERENCE IN TORONTO | May 1st, 2011
Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) and the Canadian Association for
the Study of Adult Education (CASAE/ACEEA).
Registration is now open for the 2011 Joint Meeting of AERC and CASAE in celebration of CASAE’s 30th Anniversary. From Policy to Research and Back Again | May 5th, 2011
Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation (CRRF) workshop aims to foster networking among rural researchers and to provide a forum for rural research and policy discourse. Researchers (e.g., academic institutions, government agencies and non-governmental organizations) who are interested in rural issues were invited to submit a proposal for a paper presentation or poster on any topic related to rural Canada.
In total, 24 research papers will be presented in eight (8) concurrent sessions and up to 13 posters will be displayed all day. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: place-based policy; tourism support for rural community development; measuring social capital; planning for rural health; renewable energy technologies; food security in rural First Nation communities; e-governance and community decision-making; and changing paradigms in agricultural policy.

Evaluating Community Impact May 16th – 18th, 2011
“Moving the needle” on community-wide issues requires cross-sector coordination and an engaged community. There are countless numbers of community change initiatives working on diverse issues such as early childhood development, health care, education, poverty and homelessness, immigration, workforce development, and environmental sustainability.
The Evaluating Community Impact: Capturing and Making Sense of Community Outcomes workshop is a three-day, interactive learning event designed to increase the capacity of leaders involved in community change efforts to better understand and evaluate the outcomes of these efforts.
This workshop is geared towards people involved in community change initiatives with an interest and some basic experience with evaluation.
